Koller of Greater Boston

Koller of Greater Boston

The Kollel of Greater Boston is a center for advanced rabbinic training, adult learning, and communal worship. The design challenge was to accommodate multiple modalities while adapting to an irregularly shaped parcel of land within the Aberdeen Architectural Conservation District.

Flexibility is achieved by linking small alcoves and open areas to a double-volume sanctuary and learning center. The building’s orientation relative to the odd shape of the site creates geometries that optimize the distribution of natural light. Furthermore, the resultant layout facilitates a gradual, linear transition from the ordinary to the sacred.
